THESE VIOLETS DELIGHTS
An old story with a new twist

In “These Violent Delights” by Chloe Gong we read a love story that takes place In Shanghai in the 1920s, where we follow two different gangs. Within two opposing gangs in the city, where we find the lovers, Julliette Cai and Roma Montagos. In addition, this story follows society facing difficult times, when they discover a mysterious illness that spreads really easily.
Our lovers' relationship has a history since they were both once in love and now are starting to work it out again. Whilst also trying to reveal the truth of the problem at hand, which is the illness. Even though it is a difficult task for them, since they are “competing” because they are from different gangs.
This story follows

In my opinion, the play “Romeo and Juliette” is very alike to “These Violent Delights”, since it includes a similar theme of forbidden love between partners that are separated from each other. Both characters are forced to suffer in secret since they both undergo an internal fight of choosing between being loyal to one another or to the group they associate with. Overall, I enjoyed this text a lot since there are lots of things happening at the same time and lots of action is included, this love story had me very interested in what was going to happen next.
